Rick Skillman, FACHE

Contact: rskillman@mac.com

From his background as the leader and Chief Executive Officer of several major healthcare organizations, Rick Skillman brings a unique perspective to his consulting and leadership development practice. His focus is on how leaders can align sound business judgment with a stance for respect, hope and capability directed to employees at every organizational level. His coaching revitalizes leaders’ commitment and intentions, helps build strong teams, and encourages breakthroughs in financial and performance outcomes.

Mr. Skillman has successfully led major physician groups, hospitals and regional systems for over 30 years. His accomplishments include taking over a failing multi-specialty group and turning it around to a projected break-even in 6 months, while working with physicians to achieve a 50% improvement in annual operating costs and visits per provider. In another project, he conceived and communicated a vision of hospital excellence while inspiring a level of trust, confidence, and cooperation, which resulted in a $5 million financial turn-around.

Nationally known for his ability to bring complex organizations together, Mr. Skillman has the credibility to overcome significant issues of trust. The result, in one case, was the collaborative effort to move toward an integrated delivery system. In another, he coached a CEO in developing a strategic vision linking specialty and primary care groups and medical centers into a regional provider network, negotiating contracts, and guiding the development of an innovative “intranet” product to link them.

As a financial expert Mr. Skillman led a medical center-wide initiative to reduce Accounts Receivable, yielding $32 million in cash, and directed a cost reduction initiative that reduced operating costs by $52 million in 18 months

He is currently completing a book on leadership, Memoirs of a CEO: the struggle to lead with heart and soul, and has been invited to speak at numerous organizations about his approach, including the American Society for Training and Development, and the California Lawyers Association. He is a graduate of Princeton University, holds a Masters Degree in Business (Finance) from California State University/Fullerton, and is a (Life) Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
